Cinque di Vino

A ‘Cinque di Vino’ is a ‘mensura pro taberna’ that came into existence in the 14th Century. Checked  and stamped by the local magistrates the exact volume of a bottle was guaranteed by the presence of a stamp made by the municipal seal on the bottle neck.
The law was introduced to counter frauds committed by innkeepers and glassmakers who would produce bottles that although appearing the correct size would contain a lesser quantity of wine.
This type of measure remained in use until the first half of the 20th Century in the sale of unbottled wine.
